The use of nuclear weapons by Earthlings is polluting the universe with radiation, so Starman is sent by the leaders of planet Emerald to stop the Megolians, earthlings who want to rule the world, and are willing to use nuclear weapons like I use Kleenex. The Megolians are played by westerners. All westerners in this flick are bad guys.
Like Gamera, Starman is a friend to all children, but he helps orphans while Gamera helps kids living under better circumstances. Starman is Superman Lite. He's bulletproof and can fly, but he isn't as strong, nor does he have Superman's nifty powers. Then again, Starman doesn't have to worry about anything like Kryptonite bothering him, and gets to wear a cool watch. The special effects guy didn't do a good job suspending Starman from wires, so he often looks kind of silly while flying. You can sometimes see where wires were attached. When flying, Starman makes a howl that sounds mechanical. The howl associated with Superman flying always sounded like a strong wind.
Much of the movie is spent by Starman rescuing people, and getting a critical nuclear weapon component, which looks like a glass tube filled with sand, away from Megolian agents and losing it of course, then getting it back. The fight scenes aren't quite as hilarious as those in
Attack from Space.
So, nuclear weapons, orphans, and evil westerners. I detect a decidedly post-war anti-American vibe here, much stronger than in Japanese monster movies like Godzilla.
I downloaded the 691MB DivX file. Video and audio quality were fine.
